I will have copies of a photograph and a set up to paint. We will paint from the photographs first; ideally we will paint the set up on the second day. I doctor the photograph in photo shop to assist the eye using this method instead of squinting to see shape and value. I am told this has been very helpful.
My style of teaching impressionistic painting depends on a quick beginning, using color, value and design. I will demonstrate the
lay in or foundation as I call it. Begin by painting the beginning of the painting not the end of the painting. Then I will demonstrate the next stage – showing how to lay the paint on the support without disturbing the foundation keeping its integrity.
I will then demonstrate the final stage.
Given the time and opportunity I will offer discussion of materials, brushes, supports, paint colors and brands. I am told that my insight into these subjects is new and refreshing. With my background in restoration I was schooled in these subjects from a bit different angle.
Given time I find it is helpful to discuss our efforts what we like and don’t like about the style.
I have given this workshop to painters that are accustom to painting very loose impressionistic style to the tight brush strokes of photo realism. I have heard by both ends of the spectrum how beneficial they found my instructions, often overcoming habits and going on to be happier with their results.
