CAROL HINES moved to San Antonio in 1968 and was immediately selected to help create the Texas Hall of Wildlife for the Witte Museum on Broadway. Carol produced the background murals and silk screen line drawings for the museum, as well as working on the diorama the diorama foreground structure and design. She also taught fine art for the museum during her tenure there.

Carol studied art in Europe and has an academic approach to teaching. “When you understand how a color is derived, or why paint behaves as it does, you control the outcome.” Carol advocates a limited pallet of 9 pigments plus white. These colors will create every natural color.

Carol personally paints all styles from old masters to pallet knife semi-impressionist art. Her subject matter includes landscapes, still life, flowers, and wildlife. Students are encouraged to develop their own style while continuing to learn oil painting basics.

In 1972 Carol opened Tortuga Studio in San Antonio. The studio was the largest in the city dedicated solely to fine art-oil. The average waiting time to begin study with Carol was two years.

During her time in San Antonio Carol also created Needle Arts of San Antonio to design needlepoint canvas for resale and select individual commission works. Several of these special tapestries still adorn official buildings, churches and private homes.  Her retail store, Needle Arts of San Antonio, sold supplies and taught numerous hand needlework skills.

Carol is now semi-retired and lives in Sun City, Texas where she teaches oil painting for the Visual Arts Club and teaches beading and fashion jewelry making.
