Roy McDonald has spent all of his life living close to nature. Growing up on a farm fostered respect and love for flora and fauna and gave him a chance for first hand observance of natural history. He pursued a doctorate in the plant sciences that afforded him a career in the natural world as a research scientist.
Roy’s interest in photography started at an early age when his parents gave him a Kodak Brownie camera that he used to photograph farm animals and plants. Throughout his life, he has been interested in photographing the world around him. As the years went by, he progressively obtained better photographic equipment and honed his skills to better capture scenes in nature.
He retired in Georgetown five years ago and now dedicates as much time as possible to the art of nature photography. He uses a variety of lens to capture his images. Images are digitized and printed on an Epson 2200 printer with pigment inks that produces prints that last 75 to 100 years.
Roy is drawn to photographing landscapes and wildflowers. He loves to travel to new places to experience and photograph the beauty of nature. For Roy, the camera is a creative tool with which to explore how light affects his perception of the environment, both visually and emotionally. His goal in his art is to capture the beauty, feeling and essence of a scene as he experiences it and to convey this in his photographs. Consequently, he does very little manipulation or enhancement of images in the computer.
In each of his photographs, Roy attempts to share the way he sees light, color and form. First, he attempts to impart a theme or statement that will move and inspire the viewer. Next, he attempts to simplify each composition to the extent that everything visible in the photograph helps to support the theme and nothing competes or distracts from it. He hopes that you will enjoy his artistic vision in his photographs
