Knowing that she had artistic talent, Lee Ellis studied Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico in the early 1960’s. She was fortunate to be able to study drawing, design and oil painting under several important artists including Kenneth Adams, the youngest and last member of the Taos Society Artists; Walter Kuhlman, an abstract expressionist; John Tatschl, an Austrian stained glass and sculpture artist; and Sam Smith, well known Southwestern oil painter.
For many years, Lee applied her creative talent in graphic design
for various charitable organizations and for corporate enterprises where she
worked. She also designed costumes and created set designs for the Albuquerque
Little Theatre. Her creative spirit was renewed after moving to Sun City Texas
in 2004. She has taken workshops with Carol Light, watercolor and collage
artist; Steve Napper, Ann Templeton, Denise LaRue Mahlke and other fine artists
who reside in the Texas Hill Country. She creates collage from paper, acrylic
paint and other interesting objects. She took a pastel class from Betty Lemley
after moving to Sun City and found an immediate affinity for this medium. She
continually strives to improve and build on her skill with pastels.
